The 666 caught flame: Nike recalls Lil Nas’ Satan Shoes
Matching the controversy of his new hit single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name), Lil Nas X also released a pair of Satan-themed sneakers in collaboration with MSCHF. The all black shoes with red accents had a golden pentagram attached to its laces, the numbers 6/666 and Luke 10:18 written in red ink written on them (both holding satanic implications) and they reportedly contained a drop of human blood.
The disaster struck on the 29th of March when Nike filed a lawsuit against MSCHF over the shoes because they were created using Nike’s Air Max ’97s which Nike didn’t authorize. The lawsuit has been settled and all 666 pairs of the shoes have been recalled after having been sold out in a minute online for a whopping price of $1,018!
On the 8th of April, Nike and MSCHF have agreed to settle the lawsuit, with Nike issuing the official statement saying:
“Today, April 8th, Nike and MSCHF have agreed to settle the lawsuit.
As part of the settlement, Nike has asked MSCHF, and MSCHF has agreed, to initiate a voluntary recall to buy back any Satan Shoes and Jesus Shoes for their original retail prices, in order to remove them from circulation.
If any purchasers were confused, or if they otherwise want to return their shoes, they may do so for a full refund. Purchasers who choose not to return their shoes and later encounter a product issue, defect, or health concern should contact MSCHF, not Nike.
The parties are pleased to put this dispute behind them.”
In typical Lil Nas’ fashion, he took a light-hearted approach to this situation by posting this on his Twitter account:
The public continues to speculate about Nas’ intention behind the release of the Satan Shoes with many claiming it was a publicity stunt aimed at promoting his song ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name), which might have bared fruit giving the fact that the song currently has 107 million views and its numbers keep growing. That was one hell of a marketing strategy!
