Jazmin is a 23-year-old Californian collage artist and owner of the “Quite Awfully Pretty” Instagram page where you can see a volcano of artistic prowess erupt right in front of your eyes! There is an amalgamation of vintage elements merged together with present day figures and texts that strike a chord even with the most apathetic souls. Jazmine graciously spared a few moments of her time to share about her art, dreams and goals.

Hello Jazmine! Could you please introduce yourself to the readers?

My name is Jazmin and I’m a 23 year old artist from California. I love horror movies, tiny houses, and cats.

What inspired you to create art?

I’ve only been making collage art for about 9 months and I was inspired by some art pieces that I saw by @_journalsandjunk_ on Instagram. Her pieces and the quotes she used really got to me because they were so sad but so beautiful at the same time. And then I started following similar artists and they really inspired me to make my own collages.

What themes are the most prevalent in your work?

Often, the theme I tend to gravitate towards in most of my art is lyrics or quotes about loneliness or love. I like when songs or poems talk about love in an almost painful manner because it’s usually what reminds me that I’m not the only one who feels this way. It’s pretty much the theme for almost all of my pieces. I also just feel like most people relate to that sort of thing and it seems to really move people which I think is one of the greatest things about art.

What styles/colors do you prefer?

Styles and color differs depending on the lyrics or quote I’m using. I really love using vintage photos or vintage paper dolls, and that style I pair with black or dull colors. My style of collaging ranges, really. But I really really enjoy that vintage style.

What does your artistic process look like? Is it planned or improvisational?

Some art pieces are planned. I’ll write down a lyric or a quote and think about what images would fit best, or whether I’ll use letter stamps or just glue letters instead. Other times, I’ll just put random things together and I’ll usually like the end result. During the process of putting it all together, it’s always messy and there are cut out words and letters everywhere. It can be chaotic but for the most part, it’s a relaxing process.

Where do you draw ideas from?

I draw ideas mostly from music, especially from bands like La Dispute and Brand New. I sometimes get ideas from poetry, or from magazines.

What are you working on at the moment? Can you share what is it about?

I haven’t started a new collage piece as I’m also a Photorealism artist and do portrait commissions. That’s what I’m working on now.

Who are your biggest artistic influences?

My biggest artistic influences would definitely be @_journalsandjunk_ and @tayler.creates , both on Instagram. I really love their work.

Are there any artists you’d like to collaborate with? If so, on what kind of projects do you have in mind?

I’m hoping to collaborate with @dempoems on Instagram soon. I don’t know much details yet but I’m hoping to be able to create a collage for his amazing poetry.

Where do you hope your art takes you in the future?

I’m hoping that wherever my art takes me, either Photorealism or collaging, that it’s somewhere I can be freely creative. I want my art to be able to bring joy and emotion to others whether it’s through social media or not.
